A Global Destination for Advanced Eye Surgeries

Bangalore, March 11: Vasan Eye Care Hospital, Rajajinagar has emerged as a preferred destination for high-end, ultramodern eye surgeries. With a distinguished team of specialist surgeons and state-of-the-art technology, the hospital has been successfully treating complex eye conditions, including cases that have been declined by other tertiary eye care institutions across India.

Addressing a press conference, Dr Devashish Dubey, Medical Director and Chief Vitreo-Retina Surgeon said that the hospital had all specialities under one roof with state-of-the-art machines including multispot laser.

Recently, the hospital received a 45-year-old patient from Sudan who had lost vision in one eye due to multiple complications. The patient had undergone various eye procedures in different hospitals across multiple cities but was unable to achieve visual recovery. Seeking a last hope, he approached Rajajinagar Vasan Eye Care Hospital for advanced treatment.

A team of expert ophthalmologists, led by Dr Devashish Dubey and Dr Devika Singh, Cornea and Phaco-Refractive Specialist, conducted a thorough evaluation of the patient’s condition. His only functional eye was affected by an opaque corneal graft, oil-filled retinal detachment, and early-stage glaucoma. Given the complexity of his case, a meticulous, multi-step surgical plan was formulated to restore his vision.

Dr Dubey said, “The comprehensive surgery included several advanced ophthalmic procedures. A temporary keratoprosthesis (Temp K Pro), a temporary artificial cornea, was used to access the inner eye structures. Scleral oil removal (SOR) was performed to extract previously injected silicone oil, preparing the retina for further intervention.”

A sutured scleral-fixated intraocular lens (SFIOL) was then implanted, with the specialized intraocular lens sutured into the sclera (white of the eye) for better visual stability. Additionally, a retinectomy was carefully performed, removing part of the retina to prevent recurrent detachment and improve visual function.

To further support the retina, a fresh silicone oil injection (ReSOI) was administered, helping to maintain its position. Oil-retaining sutures and pupilloplasty were used to optimize the pupil structure for better light entry and vision.

Finally, an optical penetrating keratoplasty (Optical PKP), a full-thickness corneal transplant, was performed to replace the opaque graft with clear corneal tissue.
The entire procedure was conducted under local anesthesia, ensuring minimal discomfort for the patient. Post-surgery, the patient experienced a smooth recovery, and his vision was successfully restored.

Overwhelmed by the life-changing outcome, he expressed immense gratitude to the medical team.
