Chess Teaches Us to Strategically Face Political Challenges: DCM D.K. Shivakumar

Bengaluru, April 10: “Politics is an art of strategy, much like chess,” said Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar while inaugurating the 2nd Namma Bangalore International Grand Masters Open Chess Tournament – 2025 at the Inllangaana Stadium in Koramangala, Bengaluru. He kicked off the event with a symbolic chess move and drew parallels between the game and politics.

“Chess teaches us to think ahead, be cautious with every move, and understand how to deal with adversaries—just like in politics,” he said. “Protecting the king in chess is akin to navigating leadership in governance—it requires mental agility and foresight.”

The DCM praised Kalyana Karnataka Board President Dr. Ajay Dharmasingh for taking initiatives to promote chess in the Kalyana Karnataka region. “We will extend all necessary support to popularize the sport in our districts,” he assured, instructing officials to take suitable action.

Expressing his delight at being part of the event, Shivakumar noted that over 10,000 players had registered for the tournament—reflecting a tremendous response. “This is not just a one-time event. India has always had a deep connection with chess, producing legends like Viswanathan Anand and Gukesh. This game can help individuals unlock their true potential,” he added.

Dr. Ajay Dharmasingh emphasized that the seven districts of Kalyana Karnataka make up a fourth of the state’s population. “We aim to make chess a priority in this region. Just like the game, we must adapt our strategy based on our opponent’s move. With participants from 20 countries and 25 Indian states, Bengaluru is truly evolving into a global chess hub,” he remarked.

Karnataka State Chess Association Vice President Soumya M.U highlighted the city’s growing importance in the global chess scene. “Our vision is to place Bengaluru prominently on the world map for chess. With prize money of Rs 50 lakh, this tournament will give a major boost to players. It’s heartening to see participants ranging from 6 to 82 years of age,” she said.

Also present at the event were Additional Chief Secretary of Youth Empowerment and Sports Department Randeep D, All India Chess Federation Vice President Dr. D.P. Anantha, and Karnataka State Chess Association President Madhukar T.N, among others.
